During their advance, the Ottomans were warriors to stay physically fit. To do this, they practiced various types of sport. Before a great battle, while a forty soldiers were training in combat, two of them decided to compete and fight until death ensues. Late at night, both fighters eventually die. Their comrades buried them under a fig tree.

Some time later, a fountain of spring water flowing all around the fig tree. The other warriors named the place of mortal combat Kirkpinar (meaning the 40 sources) and declared: "They were 40 and they were the first to arrive here." With reference to the 40 fighters and two dead buried under the fig tree. Since then, Kirkpinar remained in history as being a violent wrestling match.
